CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s SWAT team was deployed early Thursday afternoon after a man barricaded himself in an apartment in south Charlotte, according to local reports.

"Members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department SWAT Team are attempting to serve a warrant in the 8500 block of Sharon Road West," CMPD said in a statement that urged motorists to avoid the area.

The standoff at the Aurea Station apartment complex began as police attempted to serve the man with a warrant, FOX46 reported. "We just heard a loud bang coming from the apartment complex," the station’s reporter tweeted from the scene. "Several residents waiting to get back inside took off running."

The apartment complex is located off Sharon Road, on Winter Oaks Lane.

This is a developing story and will be updated when more information becomes available.
